JAN LOOTEN (Amsterdam, 1617/1618 - York, 1681) Wooded landscape with rocks and stream Signed Jan Looten lower right Oil on canvas, 125X190 cm Provenance: Milan, private collection Jan Looten in 1642 became a member of the militia, famous for being portrayed by Rembrandt. Looten settled in London in 1665 where he opened a painting studio and enjoyed immediate success. Specialising in woodland landscapes, the artist was influenced by the works of Cornelis Vroom and Jacob van Ruisdael, although a group of paintings on small copper plates are reminiscent of the archaic landscapes of Flemish art. In our case, the work compares well with the Landscape in the Boymans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, signed and dated 1658, and with the Landscape in the Gemaldegalerie in Kassel, in which the same compositional layouts, airy sense and elevated perspective point of view can be found.
