Lot no. 197
JAN VAN BUKEN (Antwerp, 1635 - 1694) Interior scene Signed and dated indistinctly in the bottom centre: Jan Van Buken fecit 169. Oil on canvas, 62X84.5 cm Provenance: Milan, private collection The style and quality of the work allowed Fred Meijer to assign its execution to Jan van Beucken and judge it to be typical of his production, as can be seen from the often palm-sized comparisons with autograph creations. Born in Antwerp and registered in the Guild of St. Luke in 1658, van Beucken is documented in Rome between 1666 and 1682, but we know that he returned to his native city several times during these years. Typical of his Capitoline production are the market scenes, described with a naturalistic and Italianising sensibility, but equally peculiar are the canvases depicting kitchen interiors, conceived, as in our case, according to the Flemish tradition and the influence of David Teniers. By way of comparison, we can cite the Kitchen Interior with a Maid Cleaning Poultry (cf. https://rkd.nl/images/12904) and the Kitchen Interior with a Young Man Handing a Mussel to a Woman (cf. https://rkd.nl/imageslite/85897), in which we observe similar scenic settings, the affinity between the figures and the taste for arranging food and crockery in bulk. We thank Fred Meijer for the attribution.
