Wie das Ruderboot und die Fähre gehört das Pferdefuhrwerk zu den am häufigsten dargestellten Staffage-Motiven bei van Goyen. Es ist das Fortbewegungsmittel auf dem Lande. Auf unserem Gemälde stellt es das zentrale Bildmotiv dar, da es mit seinen sieben Insassen samt der restlichen Rastenden, die sich darum versammelt haben, als erstes wahrgenommen wird. Das Gemälde stammt aus der Mitte der 1630er Jahre. Stilistisch gehört es zu einer Übergangszeit zu den späteren, monochromen Bildern van Goyens. In this painting it is the central motif and, along with the surrounding figures, attracts the immediate attention of the viewer. The painting was made in the mid 1630s. In terms of style it belongs to a transitional period towards the late monochrome paintings of van Goyen. A yellow-gold palette acts in contrast to the grey and white of the sky and dominates the painting.
