Jan van Huysum (Huijsum) (1682 Amsterdam - 1749 ibid.) Successor
Floral still life with insects in a stone niche
An opulent bouquet of various fragrant and richly detailed spring and summer flowers arranged on a stone console in an arched niche, surrounded by insects such as bees, flies, ants, butterflies and snails. A high-quality, finely glazed copy after the lost oil painting on wood panel by Jan van Huysum from the former Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum (now the Bodemuseum) in Berlin (inv. no. 972B). Van Huysum's works were already highly regarded during his lifetime, especially his splendid, harmoniously composed floral pieces, emphasised by skilful lighting, which were characterised by extraordinary delicacy and fidelity to nature. Although the artist had no direct pupils, he found numerous followers and imitators thanks to his enormous success. Oil on canvas, relined; 79.5 cm x 58.5 cm. Frame.
The painting is registered by the RKD in The Hague as "after Jan van Huijsum" (after 1720) (RKD no. 117874).
Provenance: Sir William Lyons, Wappenbury Hall, Warwickshire; Sotheby's Sale, London, 8.12.1993, lot 289; liquidation of an important German private collection - part II.
