Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) A pair of red Kutani glazed porcelain horn vases showing a large continuous scene of rakan (arhat) on rocks by the water under a large pine tree, seated or standing with their attributes and companions, as well as an oni, and the Queen Mother of the West (Seiôbo) in the air (each vase showing different rakan), framed by a red and gold honeycomb pattern at the foot and under the lip, mark to base: "Dai Nippon Kutani Eiseido 大日本九谷榮生堂" (i.e. the workshop of Haruna Shigeharu). H. 42.5 cm Restored damage to the rim on one of the vases.
