Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Small cabinet with six drawers and a leaf opening onto two drawers in gold maki-e lacquer on a black background of a tree with fruit (mikan) inlaid with bone and mother-of-pearl, a landscape on the two upper drawers, and a scene in polychrome lacquer on the leaf (a man drinking sake served by a woman), The inside of the leaf and the two drawers decorated respectively with a flowering basket and scissors, and maple leaves, on the same nashi-ji lacquer background, the sides and top decorated in gold lacquer on a black background with landscapes in medallions and scattered prunus flowers, and the back decorated with butterflies, the fittings incised with foliage. The four-legged base may have been added, decorated in maki-e lacquer with bamboo and mura nashiji.
