JAPAN - Rare and amusing polychrome tinted ivory netsuke, Meiji period, depicting a man carrying a crate on his back and riding a giant sparrow of good omen called "fukura suzume", its eyes inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The himotoshi are encircled with green-tinted ivory.
Signed Meiun "明雲" under the base in a black pastille.
