JAPAN, 19th century Smoking set consisting of a bamboo and silver pipe, a muzo-zutsu type pipe case in bamboo basketwork decorated in silver takamaki-e lacquer with a pine tree in the snow and holly, signed Choei (or Chohide) in a cartouche, attached to a tobacco pouch in textile embroidered with floral motifs, the clasp in gilt and silver metal, representing three crabs and on the reverse a river and its rushes (signed Ichi/kazu . ?), and on the cord an ojime in the form of an openwork pearl decorated with gilded copper butterflies, signed Ichigyoku (or Kazugyoku).
