JAPAN, 20th century. TWO SMALL ivory OKIMONO (Elephantidae SPP), Ebisu with his mallet and two musicians on his bag of wealth from which children are emerging (one foot broken), H. 4 cm and Ebisu and Daikoku wrestling. H. 3.5 cm. Comment: The okimono shown here are typical of the early 20th century. The demand for precious Japanese objects for the European market was very high at the time, and ivory okimono met this demand. They usually depict scenes of daily life, "small trades" and craftsmen, or finely carved deities and characters from Japanese folklore.Elephantidae SPP Gross weight: 85 g.
