Lot no. 100
(GARDENS). FONTANES (Louis de). BAUT DE RAMON Baron. Le Verger, poëme Avec des notes critiques par M. le Baron B. de R. suivi d'un Essai sur l'Astronomie. Ghent, Goesin, 1791; in-8 (185 x 117 mm), long-grained red morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt fleurons, arms on boards, green tabis endpapers, gilt edges (Bound by Lefebvre). For or against picturesque gardens, i.e. English gardens?
Baut de Ramon counters Fontanes' criticism, who prefers the humble orchard to the "bizarre forms of Whately and Morel" and the "Chinese marvels" of Blenheim and Kew with a point-by-point defence of the charm and natural beauty of English-style parks.
A very fine copy bound c. 1820 by Lefebvre, nephew and associate of Bozerian, for the Duchess of Berry, who had just acquired the Château de Rosny and had a magnificent English park laid out there.
Ex-libris of Th. de Jonghe (1801-1860) who had his arms gilded at the foot of the spine and of C. Pieters (1806-1896).
