"EVERY MOMENT I FEEL MORE AND MORE HOW MUCH I EXIST THROUGH HER AND FOR HER...".
NECKER (Jacques). Autograph letter [to François Coindet]. S.l., 19 May 1794. One p. in-12.
"I had no doubt, Sir, of your interest. I am more unhappy than I can express.
Everything is empty for me and every moment I feel more and more how much I existed through her and for her. I don't know what time will do to me, but at the moment I don't believe what they say. There are feelings that come in all shapes and sizes, and at my age the season of destruction is over. Farewell, Monsieur...".
Jacques Necker mourns his wife, who died on 6 May 1794: Suzanne Curchod, a pastor's daughter with a strong personality and great beauty, had received a meticulous education in science, modern languages and ancient languages. She had run a salon in Paris open to philosophers and encyclopaedists: d'Alembert, Buffon, Diderot, Abbé Raynal and Abbé Morellet. She founded the charitable institution that became the present-day Necker Hospital.
