Provenance: Sale of the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, 14 December 1906, no. 115 (according to a label on the reverse)
The label on the back of the painting refers to the sale of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux's studio on 14 December 1906. It is lot 115 of this sale, described as a wooded landscape with a bridge and a stream.
Carpeaux discovered the medium of painting during his stay in Rome between 1856 and 1862. It was through the students at the Villa Medici and his friend Joseph Soumy that he learned to wield the brush. Together with Charles-François Sellier, they practised copying the Renaissance masters, in particular Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceilings, which had a profound effect on the young artist.
Our lovely tondo painting was probably painted during Carpeaux's convalescence in the Drôme in the winter of 1857-1858, when he was nursing his frail health.
