Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux painted this portrait at the time of his engagement to Amélie de Montfort in 1869, as well as those of other members of his family-in-law, his father-in-law, Viscount Palamède de Montfort, and Simon's brother, Louis de Montfort. Carpeaux used a similar layout for these three portraits, showing them in three-quarter view against a brown-green background.
