Lot no. 19
Jean-Baptiste GREUZE (Tournus, 1725 - Paris, 1805)
The farmer's son's first wheat harvest
Black stone, brown and grey ink and grey wash
(Washes rubbed)
Without frame
The farmer's son's first wheat harvest, black chalk, brown and grey wash, by J.-B. Greuze
18.70 x 23.42 in.
47.5 x 59.5 cm
Our drawing appears to be one of Greuze's last major projects, circa 1800, but never completed. It could be a counterpart to the painting presented at the Salon of 1801, no. 159, A farmer handing the plough to his son, in the presence of his family. Our drawing shows the scene after the harvest: the farmer, proud of his son, wraps his protective arm around him, in the foreground a woman on her knees holding a bushel of wheat thanks them, while on the left a woman runs up with a loaf of bread.
Lot from outside the EU/temporary importation.
The hammer price is exclusive of VAT. VAT at the reduced rate of 5.5% applies to the auction. This VAT is recoverable for French professionals. It is reimbursable for a buyer from outside the EU on presentation of proof of export from the EU or for a professional buyer with an intra-Community VAT number and a document proving delivery in the Member State.
Lot in temporary admission.
The hammer price will be VAT excluded. 5.5% VAT will be added to the hammer price. Upon request, this VAT can be refunded to the purchaser on presentation of written proof of exportation outside the EU or to the EU purchaser who will submit his intracommunity VAT number and a proof of shipment of his purchase to his EU country home address
