Jean-Baptiste-Jacques AUGUSTIN (Saint-Dié, 1759 - Paris, 1832) Portrait of Louis XVIII (1755-1824), King of France Watercolour and gum arabic on ivory, oval shape Signed and dated 'Augustin /1817.' on the left CIC n° 2024/BE01789/CE Rectangular frame in chased and gilt bronze decorated with pine cones and foliage bearing the annotation 'Gibert, Quai Voltaire, N°17, à Paris' on the thickness. Attached is a seal of the royal coat of arms of France under the Restoration, in agate and gold mount, all preserved in a modern rectangular case from Lavender, London. This is an official portrait full of humanity by the great painter of miniatures in the service of the Bourbons during the Restoration. Dated 1817, this work is two years later than the first copies dated 1815, three of which are listed by Bernd Pappe (op. cit. supra p. 329). Augustin was a loyal supporter of the returned dynasty, and his portraits of the Dukes of Berry and Orléans and other members of the family are among his finest achievements. The quality of the chased and gilded bronze frame and the seal that accompanies our portrait make this set a moving subject for memorabilia.
