Jean-Baptiste-Louis Clouet, better known as Abbé Clouet, was a renowned French cartographer of the 18th century. An eminent member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Rouen, he began publishing geographical atlases such as Géographie moderne in collaboration with Louis Joseph Mondhare, a publisher on rue Saint-Jacques in Paris. In 1776, he produced a remarkable set of wall maps representing the four continents: Africa, America, Asia and Europe. Each map was accompanied by titles in French and Spanish, and surrounded by decorative scenes illustrating various aspects of each continent. The Map of Africa was divided into its main states, based on the astronomical observations of the Académie des Sciences and the most recent memoirs. Similarly, the maps of America, Asia and Europe were divided into their main countries.
