Jean-Baptiste Oudry. (1686 Paris - 1755 Beauvais) Successor, probably active in the 19th/20th century; The rhinoceros "Clara" Naturalistic depiction in an idealised landscape. "Clara" is one of the most famous animals in the history of nature, culture and art and was the sensation of the 18th century; The tame Indian rhinoceros was born in Bengal in 1738 and was shown as an attraction on tours throughout Europe for many years from 1741 until its death in 1758. Apart from a few differences in the landscape, the present painting is based on Oudry's famous work created in 1749, which shows "Clara" life-size. As early as 1750, Duke Christian II. Ludwig zu Mecklenburg(-Schwerin) acquired the monumental painting from the artist. In 1750/51, he had a smaller copy made for his picture gallery, the original came to his hunting lodge in Ludwigslust, was later rolled up and deposited, and has only been on display again in the Staatl.
