Lot no. 53
Jean DESPRÉS (1889-1980)* - France Silver and black lacquer ring with arched shoulders and alternating black lacquer and silver lines. Goldsmith's hallmark and a guarantee hallmark (crab). Finger size: 53 Gross weight: 16.4 g. In 1928, Després' jewellery was judged to be too modern and was rejected at exhibitions, but he refused to adapt and did what he called "Marie-Antoinette". From 1929 onwards, the trend was reversed as tastes became accustomed to these new shapes. The choice of silver, his hammer blows on the metal and the use of lacquer were all trademarks of the artist. The shoulders reflect the graphic motifs of the Art Deco period, with superimposed semi-circles, and look more like model no. 22, registered on 14/11/29, than the model made around 1935, which saw a widening of the shoulders (Bibliography: M. Gabardi, Jean Després, Bijoutier et orfèvre entre Art Déco et modernité, Paris, 2009. Model shown in the book, p. 79). Please do not bid via Drouot live for this lot. We only accept telephone bids.
