This imposing, solid, articulated bracelet, made around 1931, is part of the collection of jewellery reminiscent of engine parts with which the artist was very familiar. His background as an aviation mechanic at the end of the First World War enabled him to rediscover these perfectly interlocking lines. It's a work of great precision on an almost crude canvas. This is surprising during a period in the history of jewellery when Art Deco focused mainly on diamond-covered jewellery. What is unmistakable is the graphics, the lines, the symmetries, while retaining a freedom from them. While platinum is the metal favoured by many, Jean Després uses his strength to beat silver to give it volumes that go perfectly with the materials. He is the "Picasso of jewellery", the man whose talent is not expected but who stands out as one of the visionaries of his time.
