Small booklet in-4, long-grained aubergine morocco, double gilt fillet with corner fleurons, gilt AA number in the centre of the covers, smooth spine with full-length title and gilt fleurons at head and tail, gilt edges (19th century binding). Not in Bechtel (236/D296). (4f.) / A4 / 28 lines / 82 x 126 mm. A very rare edition of this advice to young girls, perhaps the only known copy. Jean Divry, born around 1472 in Beauvaisis, was a doctor and poet. He published several works of poetry and medicine in the early years of the 16th century, including Les Secretz et loix de mariage, as well as several translations from Latin into French. These Etrennes des Filles de Paris are a series of advice and adages in the form of disticts, on the dress and attitudes that young girls should observe: Pompous girls & braggarts Are considered for cognardes... Thus the author enjoins them to always keep their eyes downcast, not slander, remain sober at table, pray often, etc, as much to avoid any excess as to escape the judgment of others: Fille qui soigneusement se farde / Devient facilement paillarde, Fille en dance ｸ bancquetz boldie / Se monstre folle ｸ estourdie, etc. These tips are followed by two light rondeaux. This rare edition is not referenced by Brunet or Bechtel and seems to have escaped all bibliographers. The latter cite a single edition for this title, published in Paris around 1530, also in 4 leaves and with 28 lines, but which presents a few differences with ours: the title Estrennes has two n's and the play is signed in fine by the anagram Riand Jhe vy, for Jehan d'Ivry. This final signature is absent from our edition. The entry in the Audenet catalogue describes it as an original edition, without attributing it to an author. The copy in Chantilly includes the final anagram but has other differences and is therefore a third edition of the same piece. The BnF copy (RES. YE-1387) also includes the anagram in fine. It seems highly likely to us that our edition was published in Paris just before those with the author's name in anagram. At the time of binding, this very thin platelet was followed by numerous blank leaves (42f.), to thicken the volume and allow the title to be stamped on the spine. A fine copy with no restorations, in a fine binding from the first half of the 19th century. Minor discolouration to edges of boards. Side margins of leaves slightly frayed over 2.5 cm and top margin slightly bevelled. Provenance: Adolphe Audenet (gilt figure, 2 April 1839, no. 315).
