Lot no. 1751
Jean Dufy (1888 Le Havre - 1964 Boussay) Parisian street scene with carriage and riders Probably created around 1950, this work by Dufy was significantly influenced by Fauvism and Matisse. Jean Dufy was the younger brother of the famous Fauvist Raoul Dufy (1877 - 1953), which must have encouraged him in his decision to turn to painting after completing his commercial training and military service. Jean Dufy moved to Paris in 1912, where he quickly met André Derain, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and the important poet and writer Guillaume Apollinaire. As early as 1914, Dufy presented his watercolours for the first time at the "Galerie Berthe Weill" in Paris and met with great acclaim. From 1920 to 1938, Jean Dufy took part in a series of exhibitions in Paris and New York, and in 1937, together with his brother Raoul, he executed a monumental ceiling fresco for the World Exhibition. Paris was his favourite subject, which inspired him to create numerous oil paintings, watercolours and prints. Dufy painted the lively streets, squares, parks, the Eiffel Tower, the Seine, Notre Dame, Montmartre and Sacre Coeur in a cheerful pictorial language and bright, sometimes luminous colouring. Watercolour a. gouache/paper. Signed lower right; signed lower left; approx. 19 cm x 27.8 cm. Frame. Watercolour and gouache on paper. Signed.
