Provenance : Galerie Michel Couturier and Co, Paris, photo n° 46.672, archive n° FP 207 Collection particulière, Paris Bibliographie : Ce tableau sera inclus dans le catalogue raisonné actuellement en préparation par Madame Marie-José Lefort Plusieurs expositions de première importance des œuvres de Jean Fautrier ont lieu en 1956, l'une à Paris intitulée Nus avec un catalogue préfacé par Francis Ponge, une deuxième à New York, intitulée Les objets de Fautrier à la Alexander Iolas Gallery, avec un catalogue préfacé par André Malraux qui écrit : “[…] La technique de ses tableaux actuels, qui sont nombreux, exige une exécution rapide, et beaucoup d'entre eux semblent des improvisations lyriques, mais sont les fruits soudains d'une lente maturation, au sens où le sont les poèmes modernes […] Prenez garde qu'il ne s'agit pas de taches heureuses. Cette peinture est spécifiquement peinture, et de plus en plus, mais, aussi éloignée d'un art abstrait que d'un art réellement figuratif, elle est aujourd'hui liée à l'univers par un lien dont je ne vois le semblable dans l'art contemporain […]” Ce tableau Composition exécuté en 1956, qui ne fut pas exposé à New York, peut, sans conteste, se faire l'illustration de ce texte admirable. Composition appartint à Michel Couturier qui fut le dernier marchand de Jean Fautrier et qui signa avec lui un contrat d'exclusivité en 1963. En 1964, il organisa deux expositions personnelles, la première en avril-mai, Fautrier, peintures récentes, la seconde en octobre-novembre, Hommage à Fautrier, alors que le peintre venait de mourir. Après la mort de Jean Fautrier, Michel Couturier expose en 1965 ses sculptures et ses gravures et, en 1966, il organise une rétrospective, Peintures, dessins sculptures, eaux-fortes de 1926 à 1964, avant d'orchestrer une dernière manifestation en 1968 autour des célèbres Otages. JEAN FAUTRIER COMPOSITION, 1956 Several exhibits of major importance in the oeuvre of Jean Fautrier were held in 1956 - one in Paris showing his Nus with a catalogue prefaced by Francis Ponge, and a second in New York, entitled Les objets de Fautrier at the Alexander Iolas Gallery, with a catalogue prefaced by André Malraux who wrote: “[…] The technique of his current paintings, which are many, requires fast execution, and many of them seem to be lyrical improvisations, but in fact they are the sudden results of a slow maturation process, in the same sense as modern poems […] But be careful, these are not just happy accidents. This painting is specifically painting, increasingly so, but, as far from an abstract art as from a truly representational art, today it is linked to the universe by a connection that I have never seen elsewhere in contemporary art […]” The painting Composition, executed in 1956, and not exhibited in New York, can indubitably be used to illustrate this admirable text. Composition belonged to Michel Couturier, Jean Fautrier's last art dealer, with whom he signed an exclusive contract with the artist in 1963. In 1964, he organized two one-man shows, the first in April and May - Fautrier, peintures récentes, and the second in October and November, Hommage à Fautrier, soon after the death of the painter. After Jean Fautrier's death, Michel Couturier exhibited his sculptures and engravings in 1965, and in 1966 he organized a retrospective, Peintures, dessins sculptures, eaux-fortes de 1926 à 1964, before organizing a final exhibit in 1968 for the famous Otages series.
