Pierette / hommage de son ami / très dévoué / G Geoffroy / souvenir d'Algérie 94' lower left Annotated 'Pigagnot' on the stretcher on verso The oranges seller, pastel, signed and dated, by J. Geoffroy called Geo 32.08 x 21.26 in. 81.5 x 54 cm Provenance: Private collection, Ile-de-France Widely recognised as the "painter of childhood", regularly offering charming images of the everyday life of city children, Jean Geoffroy, known as Géo, here presents us with a work that is much rarer in his corpus, corresponding to a short stay that our artist made in Algeria between 1894 and 1895, from which he drew some small masterpieces. This is the case with our ambitious pastel, precisely located and dated by the artist, in which he uses a particularly virtuoso technique to paint the tender image of a young girl sitting in front of her basket of oranges.
