Our work is a study for the large composition La jeune flle et la Mort, lot 66 in the catalogue. Much more than a sketch, this painting reveals Jansem's creative process: a fleeting image is brushed over vigorously, like a drawing; it is also an attempt dynamic composition; then the colours are applied; their very strong relationship their very strong relationships show a desire to transcribe a passionate scene. In the final, large-scale composition, the balance of the composition is restored, the colours are softened and the details softened. These changes were dictated by the canvas's large format, in order to retain the evocative power of this study. Compared with its final version, this painting is a formidable testimony to the artist's the artist's creative process.
