There are no other miniatures of men by Mosnier showing the model seated and depicted with both hands. Until now, only miniatures of men in bust form have been recorded (Pierrette Jean-Richard, Miniatures sur ivoire, Musée du Louvre. Musée d'Orsay, Paris, 1994, p. 263, nos 472 and 473).
Our portrait allows Mosnier to display his talent for depicting silks and satins. As Leo R. Schidlof points out (La miniature en Europe, Graz, 1964, II, p. 591), "Mosnier was a brilliant miniaturist. He painted extensively and boldly in gouache, which he even used in part on the faces. In almost all the miniatures, we find shimmering silks, which he rendered perfectly".
