Commentary:
A champion of Orientalism, the painter and sculptor Gérôme made nine trips to the Orient between 1853 and 1880.
He produced several paintings, including "Bonaparte in front of the Sphinx" (1867).
He exhibited the model of our sculpture at the Salon of 1897, a copy of which was acquired by the State and is now kept at the Musée d'Orsay.
