Lot no. 239
Jean-Louis ALIBERT (1766-1837). P.A.S. "Alibert de l'Hôpital Saint-Louis et du Lycée Napoléon", [1813 ?] 4 pages in-4. Important consultation on the health of Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland.
He has carefully read the report on His Majesty's illness, and the details presented leave no doubt as to the true nature of the symptoms he is experiencing. The disease clearly affects the lymphatic system and various tissues... Previous illnesses, such as scabies or "syphilitic infection", may have influenced the current infection. He insists in particular on the impression of cold that was constantly so disastrous for him: he recalls in particular the patient's suffering during "the painful crossing on his return from Egypt", etc. In his conversation with Her Majesty, he explained the consequences of the cold in such an illness. As for the pimples, irritations and sluggishness of the intestinal tract (constipation), none of this is unusual. He recommended rubbing with Nerval balm, eau de Cologne, etc. He advised the use of mineral waters: Barèges water in baths, but not for internal use: "Spa, Vichi, Selz waters, etc. are better for the stomach. [...] Don't forget the Cransac steam baths", which facilitate perspiration and revive the skin's absorbent function. Why not use urtication, which is much more successful than electricity and galvanism? And why not Perkins needles? It is true that this method has never been used in France. For constipation, there is nothing better than olive oil, already used successfully by the ancients: "I advise His Majesty to use it in enemas, [...] to be followed by a salt water enema, to excite the muscular contractivity of the intestinal tract". He also recommended the use of almond milk, quinine extract, etc.
