Jean-Michel Basquiat
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican origin, and a key figure in Pop Art and Neo-Expressionism. Formerly a graffiti artist under the pseudonym SAMO, he made his mark on the New York art scene in the 1980s with a raw, instinctive style, full of symbols, words, skulls and cultural, historical and social references. A close friend of Andy Warhol, he collaborated with him on several iconic works. Basquiat also influenced the world of fashion and luxury, with notable posthumous collaborations with Comme des Garçons, Supreme, Louis Vuitton, Uniqlo, Coach and Dr. Martens. His work, imbued with urban poetry and political commitment, remains one of the most sought-after on the contemporary art market.
