Lot no. 481
Jean Michel GROBON (1770-1853) The Saône, the castle of Pierre-Scize Oil on panel, inscribed on verso "Grobon / 1793". H. 28 cm - L. 41.5 cm HVS Wooden frame with palmettes and gilded stucco. Provenance : Lodoïx Monnier Collection Private collection Exhibition : Lyon, Musée des Beaux-Arts, "Paysagistes lyonnais: 1800-1900", June - September 1984, N°56 (loan label on reverse). Bibliography : Grafe, E. (dir.), "Paysagistes lyonnais: 1800-1900", Lyon, Musée des Beaux-arts, 1984, pp. 134-135 (repr.). Etienne Grafe rightly noted in his 1984 note that this work had "souvenir value". Indeed, the Château de Pierre-Scize was destroyed by the revolutionary government in a decree on 12 October 1793, which saw it as "the symbol of royal arbitrariness and a sort of Lyonnais Bastille".
