Winter landscape on the banks of the Lys
Oil on canvas laid down on cardboard
Signed lower right: "J Montigny
26.5 x 34.8 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium
Jenny Montigny remained in the shadow of her teacher Émile Claus for a very long time. Fortunately, the quality of her work and the importance she played in the history of Belgian Luminism no longer need to be demonstrated. She is one of those artists whose modern, singular and powerful work has helped to constitute a high point in the history of art in Belgium. Water and snow have greatly inspired the Belgian luminists, as the light reflected from them creates a veritable display of colour, the transcription of which on canvas or paper represents a veritable tour de force. Here, the sky, snow and water, layered on the canvas, are made up of a multitude of colours that appear in delicate monochrome from a distance, but reveal themselves to be veritable fireworks when the eye moves closer and lingers on them.
