JEWELRY PIECE IN THE SHAPE OF AN AMPHORA - former Kofler-Truniger collection Late Antiquity, Antioch, ca. 5th–7th century AD. Chased gold with gold filigree and granulation decoration in the shape of an amphora with handles. The lower part was originally inlaid with an almandine garnet (originally four). The upper part of the amphora has a drawn-in neck, volute handles and is crowned by two crescent moons inlaid with almandine garnets and green glass paste. H 4.4 cm. Total weight 8.4 g. Inserts incomplete. Hole in the back of the amphora. Some scuffing and dents. Fragment. Provenance: - Collection of Ernst and Marthe Kofler-Truniger (1903–1990 & 1918–1999), Lucerne before 1964 (inv. no. K710N). - Swiss private collection, Lucerne, acquired from the above in ca. 1974. - By inheritance in the same Swiss family collection, Lucerne. Exhibited: Kunsthaus Zurich, Collection E. and M. According to the index card, Prof. Marvin Chauncey Ross refers to the vase as a Hellenistic stylistic element that was adopted by the Romans and continued to be used in Antioch during Roman times and beyond until the 5th century. The crescent moons, on the other hand, are stylistic elements found in jewelry from the early Migration Period (cf. B. Rupp: Die Herkunft der Zelleneinlage. Bonn 1937, Pl.
