Lot no. 1782
Johann Friedrich Morgenstern (1777 Frankfurt a. M. - 1844 ibid.)
View of Frankfurt am Main with Sachsenhausen
Detailed and subtly depicted veduta, which served as a model for an engraved and published outline etching by Johann Georg Reinheimer. Morgenstern came from an important family of artists, originally from Thuringia, and received his first lessons from his father, the church painter Johann Ludwig Ernst Morgenstern. He continued his training at the Dresden Academy under the landscape painter Johann Christian Klengel and ultimately specialised in architectural and landscape paintings of his home city of Frankfurt and its surroundings, thus creating an important and extensive historical record of the development of the Frankfurt cityscape in the first half of the 19th century. In keeping with the family tradition, his son, the renowned landscape painter Carl Morgenstern, also followed in his father's footsteps. Watercolour pen and ink drawing/paper. Signed lower right; 38 cm x 70.5 cm. Frame.
