Johann Georg Gmelin, für dessen Oeuvre die Landschaftsgemälde aus der Umgebung von Rom und Neapel kennzeichnend sind, wurde bereits in Rom als Sohn des Zeichners und Kupferstechers Wilhelm Friedrich Gmelin geboren. Zur Ausbildung ging Johann Georg Gmelin dann allerdings im Alter von 14 Jahren nach Wiesbaden und Karlsruhe. Nach seiner Rückkehr in die Ewige Stadt waren seine Veduten vor allem bei Italienreisenden außerordentlich begehrt. Zu seinen Auftraggebern zählte u.a. der Zar von Rußland. Unser Gemälde zeigt eine nahezu klassische Ansicht des Golfs von Salerno mit Blick auf Amalfi und den rauchenden Vesuv, der schemenhaft im Hintergrund links zu erkennen ist. Einen sehr ähnlichen Bildausschnitt wählte Gmelin für ein Gemälde, das in der Lempertz-Auktion vom 18. Provenance Sotheby's, Munich, 7.12.1993, lot 26. - German private collection. Roman and Neapolitan landscapes are characteristic of Johann Georg Gmelin's oeuvre. The painter was born in Rome as the son of the draughtsman and engraver Wilhelm Friedrich Gmelin and travelled to Wiesbaden and Karlsruhe for his initial training when he was 14 years old. Upon his return to Rome, his vedutas depicting the Eternal City became highly popular, especially among travellers to the city, and his patrons included the Russian Tsar. The present work depicts a classical image of the Bay of Salerno with a view of Amalfi and the vague outline of the smouldering Mount Vesuvius in the distance on the left.
