Lot no. 1882
Johann Gotthardt Kuehl (1850 Lübeck - 1915 Dresden) attr; Lively summer day at the Viktualienmarkt in Munich Impressionist view of the city, painted with a soft, pastose application of colour. Kuehl studied at the Dresden and Munich academies, and after his first encounter with French Impressionism at the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873, he moved to Paris himself in 1878-1889. In 1895 he was appointed professor at the academy in Dresden. In 1896, he received a large gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin. Kuehl was one of the early board members of the Deutscher Künstlerbund and was a founding member of the Künstlervereinigung Dresden in 1909. In addition to quiet, private interiors and genre scenes, his oeuvre also includes partially animated cityscapes, architectural landscapes and church interiors, in which he captured the moods of light and colour with virtuosity. Kuehl is considered one of the most important representatives of early German Impressionism. As an influential and successful teacher, his ideas continued in the so-called Kuehl School, including with Otto Pippel. Oil on canvas, double; 92.5 cm x 118 cm. Provenance: Auction Doyle, New York, 20.05.1998, lot 00169. Attributed to Gotthardt Kuehl (1850 - 1915). Oil on canvas, relined.
