Johann Heinrich Christian Franke (1738 Havelberg - 1792 Berlin) attr;
Portrait of King Frederick II of Prussia as "Alter Fritz"
Representative, oval half-profile bust portrait of Frederick II in a dark blue uniform coat with a bright red collar and breast star of the Order of the Black Eagle. In contrast to the famous, influential painting commissioned by the king in 1763/64 and created by J. H. C. Franke (now owned by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation), he is not wearing the tricorn hat in this portrait but keeps it on his head. The present portrait was probably painted shortly after the king's death (1786); a version was published in 1788 as "Bildniß des Hochsel. King Frederick II" at the exhibition of the Berlin Academy, Professor Börsch-Supan writes: "The quality of the present painting suggests that it was painted by the artist himself". The composition of the portrait and the reference to Franke is also documented in a copperplate engraving by Clemens Kohl from 1791, which explicitly refers to a painting by Franke as the model. Oil on canvas, double; 75.5 cm x 63 cm. Frame. Enclosed: Expertise by Professor Dr Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, 27.11.2022.
Attributed to Johann Heinrich Christian Franke (1738 - 1792). Oil on canvas, relined. Accompanied by an expertise from Professor Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, 27th November 2022.
