Lot no. 1637
Johann Heinrich Christian Franke (1738 Havelberg - 1792 Berlin) Circumference Portrait of King Frederick II of Prussia as "Frederick the Great" in a laurel wreath Representative half-profile bust portrait of Frederick II in a dark blue uniform coat with a bright red collar and breast star of the Order of the Black Eagle, framed by an oval laurel wreath. Franke created several types of portraits of Frederick, of which the one of the monarch tipping his hat was copied very frequently and became famous in art history. In contrast to the painting commissioned by the king from J. H. C. Franke in 1763/64 (now in the possession of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation), however, in this one he does not remove his tricorn hat but keeps it on his head. The present portrait was probably painted around 1764-1780 after the Seven Years' War, when the aged King Frederick II became "Old Fritz" and "the Great". Franke was strongly influenced by Anna Dorothea Therbusch, who painted the king in an almost identical pose. Oil on canvas, double; 81.5 cm x 70.53 cm. Frame. Circle of Johann Heinrich Christian Franke (1738 - 1792). Oil on canvas, relined.
