Although the artist is best known as an oil painter and for his position as official painter to Mesdames, daughters of King Louis XV, our miniature, which is reminiscent of Fragonard, bears witness to his great talent in this art, which he seems to have developed from the revolutionary period onwards. He settled in Orléans the year he painted our miniature, and is mentioned there as a miniature painter in 1793 in the Calendrier historique de l'orléanais (Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard, Les peintres en miniatures, 1650-1850, Paris, 2008, p. 282).
