Johann Kupetzky (Jan Kupecký) (1667 Bösing - 1740 Nuremberg) attr;
Portrait of the Viennese court musician Ferdinand Joseph Lemberger as a flute player
Effectively composed portrait of the court flutist against a dark background, who turns his head away from his sheet of music and towards the viewer with a dynamic turn. This, together with the composition of rhythmically repeating and intersecting diagonals, gives the painting a great, baroque, almost musical vitality. Kupetzky, an important Baroque portrait painter, had an eventful life. Having grown up in a strictly religious family belonging to the Bohemian Brothers, he escaped from them, studied painting in Vienna, lived in Italy from 1686-1709, then worked as a court painter in Vienna until 1723, before moving to Nuremberg for religious reasons. His highly personal style combines a wide range of influences from Holland, France and Italy. His oeuvre includes a large series of portraits of musicians, often in several versions. More than four versions of the present painting are also known, including in the Musikinstrumentenmuseum in Berlin (with a scenic landscape background) and in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. Oil on canvas, double; 82 cm x 64 cm. Frame.
Attributed to Johann Kupetzky or Jan Kupecký (1667 - 1740). Oil on canvas, relined.
