Johann Peter Hasenclever (1810 Remscheid - 1853 Düsseldorf)
"The sentimentalist". Original title
This nocturnal scene depicting a young woman sitting at a window with her back turned, melancholically pining at the full moon, ironically thematises the romantic, sometimes artificial sentimentality of his contemporaries, especially some of his colleagues from the Düsseldorf school of painting. Hasenclever had already painted a very similar version of the motif in 1840 in the painting "Eine Schwärmerin". In 1846/47 he created several versions of the painting "Die Sentimentale" in his own hand, which he showed at the Berlin Academy exhibition in 1846, among others; one has been preserved in the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf (inv. no. 4299). Oil on canvas; l. a. sign. a. dat. 1846. 36.5 cm x 30.5 cm. Frame.
