Provenance
Private ownership, North Rhine-Westphalia.
Johann Wilhelm Schirmer enrolled at the Düsseldorf academy in 1825, where he became a pupil of Wilhelm Schadow. He was entrusted with leading the landscape course in 1829, and was officially appointed as a professor in 1839. He went on to play a highly important role in establishing the academy's renown as an outstanding training institute for landscape painters. As of 1828, Schirmer undertook a number of educational sojourns to the Eiffel, Belgium, Switzerland and Normandy, which were followed by a longer stay in Italy from 1839-1840. He became director of the newly founded art school in Karlsruhe in 1854, where he continued to work as one of the most significant landscape painters of the era until his death.
The present work shows a sparsely wooded landscape with a brook during a storm. The treetops bow under the wind, one large tree on the right is being uprooted and a further tree lies felled upon the ground. A woman has lost her footing on the bridge over the stream, and two peasants are shown rushing to her aid. The painting's composition is highly reminiscent of the works of Nicolas Poussin and it can probably be dated to around 1845.
We would like to thank Marcell Perse from the Museum Zitadelle in Jülich for confirming the authenticity of this work after first hand examination.
