Painted in a broad, loose, softly impasto style, the artist's work was influenced by the Hague School. Lussenburg devoted himself primarily to coastal and marine paintings, in particular harbour villages with fishing boats on the North Sea and the Zuderzee (now the Ijsselmeer), on which Nunspeet was also located.
