Sven Widgren (2013) This 1995 work is a perfect illustration of the pictorial language developed by John Armleder around surface, material and controlled chance. Long vertical streaks of white, green and dark cross the canvas in a composition in which the paint seems both constructed and free to evolve. The superimposition of materials, the effects of gravity and the variations in density create a vibrant and profoundly physical surface, characteristic of the Swiss artist's research into the boundaries between painting, object and process. With its square format, mineral palette and balance between structural rigour and gestural spontaneity, this work is fully in keeping with John Armleder's most emblematic productions of the mid-1990s.
