Girl by the sea
Hip portrait of a standing, blonde girl in a white dress and bonnet, her hands clasped in front of her stomach, in the background rocky cliffs and the sea with fishing boats. Painted with an exceptionally broad brushstroke and soft, slightly impasto application of colour, this is a sensitive portrait. The painting was attributed to John Constable by Andrew Shirley (see lit.) and dated by him 1831; oil on canvas, double; 76 cm x 63 cm. Frame.
