His written report accompanies the present lot. As Klaus Ertz points out most of the collaborative works by de Momper and Vrancx date from the years before 1600. With regards to the extensive landscape setting executed in brown, green and blue, giving a view from a mountainous path over a mountain village to the bluish harbour scene in the far distance, Ertz favours a very early dating for the present painting around 1595. Already in this early stage of his career de Momper renders the contours in minutest details with a pointed brush, developing the skill that would become a benchmark of his style.
