JOSEF DANILOWATZ (Vienna 1877 - 1945 Vienna) Brink, applied artist, 1935 watercolour/paper 29,3 x 22,2 cm monogrammed D, dated 35 inscribed Brink applied artist ESTIMATE °€ 150 - € 300 STARTING PRICE € 150 Josef Danilowatz, son of a hairdresser who had immigrated to Vienna from Serbia, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Siegmund L'Allemand and William Unger. He was then successful as a graphic designer and cartoonist for the weekly magazine "Die Muskete". From 1919, he also created caricatures for the Vienna satirical magazine "Der Götz von Berlichingen". Danilowatz often stayed in Trieste, where he drew ships and port facilities. His technical interest led him to create illustrations in this area. He achieved the greatest notoriety through the front pages of the model railway catalogues of the Swabian company Märklin that he designed between 1930 and 1940. Josef Danilowatz was married to Maria Lasus, who was classified as a "half-Jew" according to the National Socialist racial laws. After his death, he received an honorary grave in the Döbling cemetery. In 1955, Danilovatzgasse in Vienna-Meidling and Liesing was named after him.
