He studied privately in Yugoslavia with the Swiss painter Walter Hofer and was influenced by the work of Toyen and the surrealist artists who were in contact with Karel Teige. From 1945 onwards Istler joined various artists' associations, including Manes and the surrealist group Ra. Istler participated in the CoBrA exhibitions held in Amsterdam in 1949 and in Liège in 1951. Istler participated in numerous group exhibitions in Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic and abroad. Istler's works are included in the following collections: the National Gallery in Prague, numerous regional galleries in the Czech Republic, the Tate Gallery in London, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum Bochum, and various museums in Munich, Stockholm, and Geneva.
