Josef (Joseph) Wopfner (1843 Schwaz in Tyrol - 1927 Munich)
Chiemsee fishermen hauling in their nets before a looming storm
Characteristic work in motif and style by the famous Chiemsee painter. Wopfner studied at the Munich Academy from 1864-1872 under Carl Theodor von Piloty, among others, and became friends with Wilhelm Leibl during this time. In 1872 he discovered the landscape of the Chiemgau with its largely unspoilt nature, the Chiemsee, the local fishermen and farmers as the most important motifs of his work from then on. From then on, he regularly spent the summer months on Fraueninsel to capture the lake in all its different moods. In 1890, Wopfner was honoured with a gold medal at the exhibition in Munich's Glaspalast. Oil/oak panel. L. and signed; verso painting label by Franz Dury, Munich; also handwritten label "Dieses Bild 'Motiv Chiemseefischer (...)' ist Eigentum des Herrn Hofrat (...?) München, den 2. Juli 1922, Max (...?). 17,5 cm x 24,2 cm. Frame.
