Josef Maria Svoboda was an Austrian painter. He primarily created portraits and landscapes. In 1946, Svoboda took his first painting lessons with Rudolf Hausner. From 1947 to 1951, he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Robin Christian Andersen and Robert Eigenberger. In 1950, he received the Academy's Meisterschulpreis (master school prize). He graduated from the Academy with a diploma in 1951. From 1952 onwards, Svoboda participated in over 70 exhibitions at home and abroad: at the Zedlitzhalle in Vienna, the Künstlerhaus, the Secession, the Palais Palffy, Florence, Innsbruck, Feldkirch, Piran, Ústí nad Labem, Litoměřice, Kraków, Mödling, Laxenburg, Brunn am Gebirge, Krems, Langenlois, Gumpoldskirchen, Linz, and St. Pölten, among others. In 1953, he became a member of the Gemeinschaft bildender Künstler Wiens (Vienna Artists' Association), Zedlitzhalle. In 1961, he joined the Gemeinschaft bildender Künstler Österreichs (Austrian Association of Fine Artists, Künstlerhaus); in 1962, he became a member of the Berufsverband bildender Künstler Österreichs (Austrian Professional Association of Fine Artists). In 1977, he was accepted as a member of the Mödling Artists' Association (Mödling Künstlerbund) and "Die Spirale." In 1978, he was awarded the title of professor. Paintings by Josef Maria Svoboda are in the following public collections: Federal Ministry of Education and the Arts, Lower Austria Museum, Arbeiterkammer (Chamber of Labour), Österreichische Galerie Belvedere (Austrian Gallery Belvedere), and Göttweig Abbey.
