From 1946 to 1948, he attended the Höhere Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna. From 1948 to 1955, he went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Josef Dobrowsky, without obtaining a final diploma. In 1956, he founded the artist group "Galerie nächst St. Stephan" with Wolfgang Hollegha, Markus Prachensky and Arnulf Rainer. His son Franz Wibmer, who is also a painter, was born in 1962. In 1964, Mikl exhibited at documenta III; In 1977 he took part in documenta 6. In 1968, Mikl represented Austria at the Venice Biennale. From 1969 to 1997, Mikl was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Mikl represented abstract realism with the human figure as the central theme.
