Josef Müllner. (1879 Baden near Vienna - 1968 Vienna)
Rape of Hippodameia by the centaur Eurytion
Bronze, dark patina. Signed and dated. 1919. foundry stamp "ERZGIESSEREI A.G. WIEN". Monumental, fully sculpted group of figures on an oval plinth with scenic depiction from Greek mythology (after Homer, Diodorus and especially Ovid). Stylistically, the bronze combines influences of Neoclassicism with those of Art Nouveau and the Vienna Secession, of which Müllner was a member from 1906 to 1911. Müllner became a professor at the Vienna Academy as early as 1910 and head of the master school for sculpture in 1922. In his early oeuvre until around 1920, he often depicted symbiotic representations of humans and animals, depicting motifs from ancient mythology, with a preference for hybrid creatures such as here. H. 92 cm.
Dark patinated bronze. Signed and dated 1919. foundry stamp "ERZGIESSEREI A.G. WIEN".
